Picture a venetian period drama set in the bustling plaza of San Marco around the 16th century. Heavily dominated by courtesans that lure in possible love interests during masquerade balls, in their finest silks and jewellery and they are not afraid of a little competition...

That was the theme set by D&G for another one of their spectacular 'Alta Moda' couture fashion shows last week, which was attended by many celebrity favourites such as Vin Diesel, JLo, Dame Helen Mirren and many more famous faces.

The women's wear show kicked off with an opening opera performance of 'Nessun Dorma' by Jennifer Hudson who was ushered by mimes and masked men, was wearing a gold ball gown with a heavily encrusted jewelled bodice. The dress was accessorised with a gold floral headband, drop earrings and a jewelled purse. The foil-like skirt was removed after the concert which changed the dynamic of the outfit completely, revealing a fabulous, figure hugging silhouette.

Drones had captured lively scenes across the Canale Grande, showcasing Gondoliers in traditional 16th century uniforms as they firmly steer runway models that float elegantly on board towards the soiree.

It was a pleasant clash of old meets new, with some of the models sporting rough cut fringes, bold styles and vibrant dip dyes. We were even greeted by a few teenage models including the daughters of hip-hop legend P Diddy, as they glided one after the other down the red carpet in puff-ball above the knee dresses, styled with flowers, ribbons and some outstanding statement jewellery.

The Venetian 16th century ran through out the entire collection with Jacquard, ruffles, drapes and crystals dominating the catwalk. Satin and glitter shimmered beautifully against the rose coloured sky in the background, dazzling the audience and those who watched at home.

decorations! These worked well against the clash of patterns and below the knee hem lines, drawing much needed attention to the Disney princess themed pumps. Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez was caught before the show strutting around in a pair of ornamented gold platforms, black floral printed high waisted trousers, a floral jewelled crop top and a brocade floral green cloak to finish the look... These were selected from the Moda Alta collection, so technically she was giving us a sneak peak of things to expect!

The clouds slowly started opening up as guests fight to release their umbrellas, saving any remaining hairstyles and to watch the grand finale. The walk of gowns commenced as the sun lay to rest, displaying a oil painting-like appearance in the background. A striking, ruffled, noir, haute couture dress with a humungous 'ruff' like design surrounding the back of the neck, dramatically closed the show. Guests and photographers rushed to award designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana with camera flashes and a standing ovation.

Then it was off to the after party to get mortal...
