I would never consider myself a "girly girl"... However I live for long nails and would definitely squeeze into a bodycon LBD and some 6" heels if i was going out out.
One of my favourite statement pieces definitely has to be a 2 piece trouser suit.
I fell in love with women's suits when I was working for high street retailer Oasis ltd and always wanted to get one (but they didn't fit, ever).
My first purchase was a dusty pink, shiny 2 piece from Topshop. I was fortunate to wear this super extravagant 'dime piece' to an Angolan house club in Lisbon for my 25th birthday and sweat like hell in it from all the dancing! I Styled it with a black lace bralette and two-toned platform heels and I felt the most power I had ever felt in a very long time and let me tell you... It showed.
My second buy was for my friends wedding by the British coastline in 2018, a vibrant red 2 piece from Miss Selfridge detailed with a crossover blazer and "Chanel styled" gold buttons. I was really finding my inner jefe (boss) in that get-up, the strides were very real! I matched that show stopper with a crisp white shirt, rose gold stiletto and a matching clutch from ASOS.
I cannot even fathom that there were times where women were not allowed to embrace the cosiness and strength of this particular piece of clothing. I cannot believe that women were not allowed to wear oversized blazers and loose fitting slacks... Until Feminists and fashion icons like Madam Coco Chanel changed the game for us ladies, now all we can do is be thankful for their fight, their light and bright ideas.
So, clean cut shirts and tailoring are showing their face again. Ralph Lauren's S/S 2021 Campaign has quite literally breathed new air into my lungs and I am living for it! Not only is the picture to the left such a sensational picture of a women in a men's styled suit, but you can already feel the strength of her character in a 1930's, gangster-love flick during the stylish art-deco period .
It told a beautiful story and word on the street was that American singer Janelle Monae features in the tale as well! Very exciting stuff if you ask me, I can't wait to watch the campaign with my own eyes (saw it in Vogue) as I was forced to watch 'Once Upon A Time In America' with Uncle Robbie (Robert De Nero) the other day and I'm still in my feelings about that...
But Ralph is not the only fashion house to bring out 'femasculinity' many other designers are taking this opportunity to bring out the Goodfellas of tailoring in shows such as Max Mara, Fendi and Michael Kors.
Loads and loads of tailored pieces are being injected into our online and high street go-to's and I recently picked up a fabulous 'sateen' shirt from the Spanish retailer Stradivarius for a few cheeky pounds! Flared bootcuts with ironed-in creases are going to be a big deal this summer... so dress down with a sports top or sweatshirt and chuck a blazer over it, because who doesn't like a sports luxe?
No one ever.
