A Day At The Office With DJ BusyFingers

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

I was offered a refreshing glass of water and a hand with my bags as I entered the house and took off my shoes. We walked up the stairs towards Busy’s mancave aka 'studio of splendour' where the young entrepreneur comes up with his creative mixes, beats and cool business ideas. The main focal point in the room was a highly decorative turntable with purple and green knobs against a deep purple feature wall. Vintage Power Rangers that I embarrassingly called Transformers were placed neatly on a shelf, promoting a huge L.A.B poster just above the sofa where we placed the bags. A captivating bright green flubber-like slime hid the face of a model which was designed by his partner and animator Alex (@dondadastudios).

Before getting into the fits and photoshoots of Dickies and Karl Kani jackets, I wanted to know the story of the man behind the decks and music pushing projects . I especially wanted to know what influences his very distinctive 'chulo' style.

K: What do you do and how did you get into that?

Busy: I DJ first and foremost, I run the L.A.B collective and through that I do ‘Beats & Liquor’

which is a DJ show / gameshow and I also do 'The Beat Meet’ which is a producer event… I dabble in some beat making and got some releases out too.

K: How did you get into DJing?

Busy: It’s a long story, but it’s not… Well it kind of is… I like listening to music and I liked playing it to people, I think I was about 14 when I got my first pair of cheap decks. I used to get my dads vinyl's and mix them, but when I got older I used CD-JAYS and Serrato and would play at house parties and people were like, you should charge and I was like alright!

K: What was your most memorable moment in your career?

Busy: F***ing ell, I dunno… I’ve done loads of cool shi*! Playing my first gig at Outlook Festival in 2017, erm my favourite is when we (L.A.B Collective) play at Brainchild Festival and we play there every year and our set is like a “thing”, we play at the end init and it's mental! It’s the thing I look forward to the most... Also stealing Dawn Penn’s drink when she wasn’t looking, not out of her cup I’m not a piece of shi*, just a little *blub blub blub* in a cup because I wasn’t famous enough to get a drink.

K: What is your go to party starter?

Busy: Fa**ing ell mate, (a huff, a hahaha and a 2 minute contemplate)

1. Dazzband - Starship

2. Any old Busta, whether they want it or not!

3. Quentin Harris - Traveling

4. Sam One – Kitale

5. Lexxus – Good Hole

K: What is your favourite go to outfit?

Busy: Well, most of my wardrobe is just different Variations of Dickies trousers and shirts. So a combination of Dickies and Carhartt at any given time, just pick a colour and that’s me. Long black Tee’s either tucked in or out depending on the mood, Wallabies or Nike Cortez’s, 2 chains and a well-oiled beard.

K: What inspires your style?

Busy: LA, them South American donnies. I’ve liked the aesthetic since I was young and one of the first types of hip-hop I got into was from the west coast and when you’re young you soak these things in. I was drawn to it and they looked f***ing cool, they look cool as shi*. It’s like simple and bold, there’s not really any branding, just very clean and you don’t need to iron dickies…

K: Favourite song at the moment?

Busy: You can’t ask a DJ that! *contemplates* ‘Under the blue moon’ by Wayne Snow, that’s up there and it’s kinda new, because most of my favourite songs are old.

K: Favourite colour to wear and why?

Black, because black. Everything is better in black apart from toast.

K: I see you’ve got a lot of Transformers around your room…

Busy: They’re Power Rangers actually. *We laugh* They’re my childhood toys but I actually bought one of them and I do wanna get some original transformers… Basically, all the toys I wanted when I was a child I just wanna collect them, that’s the little boy in me.
